Race Description:

The fourth edition of the NASC Student Association race (later renamed the "Sam Gomez Classic") was held on November 1, 1981. Continuing the trend of increasing participation, 124 entrants participated (out of 147 registered). 60 competed in the short race (3 miles) and 64 in the long race (9.25 miles). The proceeds were donated to Help Line, a local telephone counseling and referral agency. Steve Bugbee repeated in the long race, finishing with a time of 49:17. Jim Zepka won the short race with a time of 13:26, breaking the record set in the inaugural event by over a minute. Michele L. Cutsforth of Anchorage, AK was the first woman to finish the long race with a time of 64:01. A young Becky Martin of Lenox won the short race, and would go on to have great success on the Berkshire running scene of the 80's and 90's. A dog named Goldberry finished the long race in 1:08, just behind his master. It does not appear that there was a team category in this edition of the race, as there had been in the previous editions.
