Race Description:
Second edition of the NASC Student Association race (later renamed the "Sam Gomez Classic") was held on October 28, 1979. The beneficiary of the proceeds was the North Adams Community Mental Health Center, and by their own account, the race was well-organized and went off without a hitch, despite cold rainy weather and nearly thirty pre-registered runners not showing up on race day. Still, a then-record 92 runners took to the line. The format and 9.25 (or 9.3?) mile course were the same as the first edition. Pete Pfitzinger, from Rochester NY, won the race with a time of 45:27 - over six minutes faster than the previous year's victor. Nicole HIll, then a freshman at NASC, was the first woman finisher with a time of 63:41. Many age and special divisions were offered, including a team category which the Berkshire Hill Runners took for the second straight year.
