Race Description:
The third edition of the NASC Student Association race (later renamed the "Sam Gomez Classic") was held on October 26, 1980. It was chilly and breezy, but a record 104 runners turned out for the races. The proceeds went to the Northern Berkshire YMCA. This year, for the first time, the event offered two races. Runners had the option to run the original 9.25-mile course, as well as a new 2.7-mile course that ran south along Church Street to Ashland Street, down Ashland Street, up Summer Street and back to the starting line in front of the president's house on Church Street. This would ultimately become the "classic" course, very similar to the 5k route run today. 57 runners opted for the shorter (and much less hilly) race, while 47 braved the long race. Steve Bugbee of Savoy and Nicole Hill (first repeat winner) took the men's and women's trophies in the long event. Bill and Pat Nolan took top honors in the 2.7-mile race. Their times were 14:29 and 18:07 respectively.
