Race Description:
The race course was shortened to 2.82 miles to coordinate with the altered parade route. But it didn't matter to Fran Ireland, who notched his second consecutive victory in a time of 13:55 (4:29 pace). The women's race was won by Sheila Quinn of Pittsfield in 16:18 - just 3 seconds ahead of 3-time champion Beth Herder. Said Tony Dobrowolski (of The Eagle): "It appeared that Ireland hadn't broken a sweat." Quite a feat, considering the sweltering heat that (for a second year in a row) curtailed participation in the race. 429 runners finished out of 530 registered.
