Race Description:
1994 was the ninth annual running of the 5k prelude to the Pittsfield Indpendence Day Parade. Skies were clear and the heat was rising as 442 runners completed the USATF-certified 5,000-meter course (a welcome footnote, since the course had been shortened to 2.82 miles the previous year). Perhaps it was the return to the certified course length that put the pressure on the field to set new records. And both records were nearly bested. But at the end of the day, the winners Dave Ward and Rebecca Fuore each fell 1 second short of their respective records. Ward said that the record belongs in the Berkshires, and he was disappointed in missing it (running a not-to-be-ashamed-about 15:14.6). The record remained at 15:13.5 (Frank Graham ran 15:13.5 in '89). Fuore, meanwhile, ran 17:33.7 - leaving Jean Olds' record of 17:32 from 1991 intact.
