Race Description:
The tenth anniversary of the Independence Day Race was a record-setter in more ways than one. 565 runners registered, and 512 completed the race - both being new highs. In the men's event, Fran Ireland bounced back from being runner-up the prior year to not only win the race, but do so in record time - 15:10.78. The previous record of 15:13, held by Frank Graham, had stood for five years. In the women's event, Pittsfielder Natalie Blanchard won the race with a time of 18:28.55, besting 1993 champion Sheila Quinn by 21 seconds.
